So, you’re moving to Mombasa?

So, your boss just told you you’ll need to relocate to Mombasa.
How do you feel?
Probably a mix of excitement and stress, right?
It's a big move, and if you don’t plan properly, it can put a serious strain on your finances.
The key thing most people overlook?
Budgeting.
Whether you're single or moving with your family, having a solid budget can help make the transition smoother and less stressful.
In today’s post, I want to talk specifically to those moving with their families. I’ll talk about solo relocations another time.
When I first thought about relocating, I assumed things would just fall into place.
But I quickly learned that if you don’t plan well, you can end up completely drained, mentally and financially.
Based on my own experience and conversations with people who've moved to Mombasa (or the coast in general), here are a few important steps you should take and things you should consider.
(a). Don’t move the whole family at once - If you're relocating with your family, don’t bring everyone on the first trip.
Instead, travel alone, book a cheap hotel or hostel for about three days, and use that time to look for a house.
This gives you space to figure things out without the pressure of having everyone with you.
(b). Ask locals for help - Once you're settled in your hotel, talk to the staff. Ask them about safe and family-friendly neighborhoods.
Most of them will have good suggestions, they live there, after all. You can also ask them for boda boda or matatu contacts to help you get around while house hunting.
(c). Know what type of house you need - If you have a family, the bare minimum should be a two-bedroom house. If your budget allows, go for three bedrooms.
But be smart, don’t show up acting like you’re from Nairobi and throwing money around. Some landlords might take advantage and increase the rent just because they think you can afford more.
(d). Be mentally ready for the hustle - Give yourself at least 3–4 days to find a house. Don’t rush it, and don’t lose focus. Your goal is to find a safe and affordable place for your family.
(e). Be prepared for high move-in costs - Here's something that catches many people off guard: most landlords in Mombasa will ask for two months’ deposit plus the first month’s rent.
If a house costs KSh 20,000 per month, you're looking at KSh 60,000 just to move in. It sounds wild, but that’s how it works.
