Mombasa offers FREE healthcare to voters (with some limits)

There’s some good news if you’re a registered voter in Mombasa.
On June 13, 2025, Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced a new healthcare program offering free treatment at public hospitals, but only for Mombasa-registered voters.
The county secured KSh 100 million, with KSh 80 million specifically allocated to public hospital services.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, especially from residents who live in Mombasa but aren’t registered voters here.
Many hope the program will eventually expand to include all residents, not just voters.
Here’s what you need to know
1. Government funding - KSh 80 million will go directly into improving public hospitals in Mombasa, aiming to make healthcare more accessible and affordable.
2. Free treatment for young children - Children under 5 years can get free treatment at any public hospital in the county, no voter registration required.
3. Adults must be registered voters - If you're over 18, you need to show proof that you're a registered voter in Mombasa County to qualify for free treatment.
4. Public hospitals only - This program only applies to public hospitals within Mombasa County. Private facilities are not included.
5. Backup for SHA gaps - If the Social Health Authority (SHA) doesn’t cover a particular service, this county program will step in to fill the gap.
6. Part of a bigger health plan - This initiative is part of a broader KSh 100 million health investment plan led by Governor Nassir.
As mentioned earlier, not everyone is on board, mainly because it excludes non-voting residents. And details on how the rollout will work are still unclear.
Non registered voters
For those of you living in Mombasa who haven’t registered for SHA yet, do you know of any hospitals where you can get treated without paying anything, just by using SHA?
So far, I only know of one: Community Hospital in Karama, located in the Kongowea area.
It’s a private hospital, not public, but I’ve been treated there before and didn’t pay anything, I just used SHA.
If you’ve also visited this hospital, feel free to share your experience.
And if you know of any other hospitals, whether public or private, that fully accept SHA, please let us know so we can all benefit from the info.
Final thoughts
If you’re a registered voter in Mombasa and you’ve already used the service, I’d love to hear from you.
